Twisty Prism: A twisty puzzle in the shape of a prism. A prism is a solid that has flat base (usually a regular n-gon), a flat top which is parallel to the base and vertically above it, and rectangular sides which are perpendicular to the base and the top.
Layer: A twisty prism may be cut by one or more horizontal surfaces into several layers which can then be turned individually.
Cut: A twisty prism is also cut by vertical planes,
usually parallel to the sides of the top and bottom n-gons.
If a cut is closer to the side than the center of the n-gon, it is called a shallow cut. If it passes through the center, we call it a central cut. If it is farther away from the side than the center, we say it is a deep cut.
Floppy Prism: A twisty prism having one layer.
(The 1x3x3 cuboid is also called the floppy cube.)
Pocket Prism: A twisty prism having two layers and
one cut in each direction. (The 2x2x2 magic cube is
also called a pocket cube.)
Domino Prism: A twisty prism having two layers and
two cuts in each direction. (The 2x3x3 cuboid is also called the domino cube.)
Master Prism: A twisty prism which has four layers or three cuts in each direction, or both. (The 4x4x4 magic cube is also called the master cube or Rubik's revenge.)
Professor Prism: A twisty prism which has five layers
or four cuts in each direction, or both. (The 5x5x5 magic cube is also called the professor cube.)
Tower Prism: A twisty prism having three layers and one cut in each direction. (The 2x2x3 cuboid is also called a tower cube.)
Magic Prism: Like the magic cube (also called Rubik's cube), a magic prism has three layers and two cuts in each direction.
Super Prism: A twisty prism may have different
pieces with identical outward appearance (colour, shape).
If the colouring of the prism is changed such that its
pieces become pairwise distinct, we say it is a super prism.
(The magic cube with oriented centers is also called the
magic super cube.)
Triangular Prism: A twisty prism whose base and top
are equilateral triangles.
Cube or Cuboid: A twisty prism whose base and top
are squares (or possibly rectangles).
Pentagonal Prism: A twisty prism whose base and top are regular pentagons and which has shallow cuts.
PentaStar Prism: A twisty prism whose base and top are regular pentagons and which has a deep cut connecting the two almost opposite corners. In this way a pentagram shape is created on the top and bottom surfaces.
Further terminology will be added as needed. These definitions are open for discussion, of course!
