The Research and Training Network RAAG announces its Fourth Annual Network Meeting (RAAG2005), to be held in Passau, Germany, from Monday, Sept. 5 to Friday, Sept. 9, 2005. The meeting will cover all aspects of real algebraic and analytic geometry. We warmly invite all mathematicians to participate.

A first announcement was published on September 29, 2004. The second announcement was published on April 15. The third announcement was published on July 30

Travel information

The closest airports are Munich (Germany), Nürnberg (Germany) and Linz (Austria). From all airports there are trains to Passau (duration: approximately 2 hours). A general description on how to get to Passau can be found here:

We recommend to travel through the airport "Franz-Josef-Strauß" Munich. Here a detailed description on how to reach Passau from airport "Franz-Josef-Strauß" Munich:

SHORT DESCRIPTION:

  1. Arrival at Airport "Franz-Josef-Strauß" Munich.
  2. Shuttle bus from the airport to the train station in FREISING. DO NOT go to Munich.
  3. Train from Freising to Passau.
  4. How to buy tickets for the shuttle bus and the train.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION:

  1. The Airport "Franz-Josef-Strauß" Munich has two terminals, both are in walking distance from each other (maximal walking distance: 15 minutes, a map can be found here).
  2. There is a shuttle bus commuting between the airport and the train station in Freising every 20 minutes (a time table can be found here). The shuttle bus number is 635.
    • How to find the bus stop at the airport: The airport is subdivided into areas. You need to go to area "Z" (short for "ZENTRALBEREICH"), regardless at which terminal you arrive (area "Z" is located between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2)
    • Outside of area "Z" you find bus stops. One of them has a label "635" - this is the correct stop. The shuttle itself also has the label "635" on its front side. This is your bus, they all go to Freising station. (The bus actually stops at several places in the airport. If you enter a bus with no. 635 you are in the right bus). The shuttle bus takes you to the train station in Freising. Duration: not more than 20 minutes. There is only one train station in Freising and it is the last stop of the shuttle bus. Alternatively a taxi from the airport to Freising station (in German: "FREISING BAHNHOF") needs approx. 15 minutes and costs about 20 Euros.
  3. Train from Freising to Passau.
    Schedule of trains: There are many trains from Freising to Passau. You may find all trains at the following web-page: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
    We recommend to take one of the following trains, as they are cheapest and fastest: Trains are leaving from Freising every day at 9:49 11:49 13:48 15:49 17:49 19:49 21:49
    All these trains need approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to Passau. They go directly to Passau, you don't have to change the train. If you choose another train, be aware that you have to change trains and that the duration might increase up to one hour.
    The train at 21:49 is definitely the last one to Passau. In order to reach this train you must catch the shuttle bus at 21:27 in area "Z" of the airport - or you take a taxi. The baggage claim normally does not take longer than 30 minutes at the airport. Hence if your aircraft has contact to earth before 20:30 you will catch this last train.
    The Freising station is small. They have 4 platforms and the train to Passau normally departs from platform 4. This might change, see the screens which indicate the platform of your train.
  4. TICKETS for the shuttle bus and the train:
    The best thing is to buy a train ticket to Passau already at the office "Deutsche Bahn" in area "Z" of the airport. This ticket will automatically include the shuttle bus ticket. Ask the officer for a "BAYERNTICKET SINGLE" to Passau (19 Euros) which is cheaper than the regular fare. If you can not buy the train ticket at the airport you may buy a ticket for the shuttle from the bus driver (2 Euro) and then purchase the train ticket at Freising Station (from an officer if the office is open or from a ticket machine). The last possibility is to buy the train ticket inside the train. In this case you have to approach a conductor inside the train , the fare will be the regular price + 10% = 28 Euro .

 

Lunches and Conference Dinner


We have made a special arrangement with the Passau "Mensa" for lunch during the conference week. They serve good food, not spectacular though. As the campus site is not located in the city center there are few alternatives near by; most of the restaurants are in 20 minutes walking distance. If you want to have lunch at the Mensa AND if you have special wishes (e.g. vegeterian food), please inform us under ihp.raag[NOSPAM]fmi.uni-passau.de ihp.raag[NOSPAM]fmi.uni-passau.de

On Thursday we'll have the conference dinner at "Schloss Neuburg", a charming castle in 10 km distance to Passau. A bus will take us to the castle.
There is a charge of 50 Euros for the conference dinner. If you wish to attend the dinner, please inform us under ihp.raag[NOSPAM]fmi.uni-passau.de Please give us the number of persons who will join you. Also indicate if you want to have a vegeterian dish.

 

Accommodation

Arrangements have been made with four hotels and one boarding house for rooms at a special rate. The conference participants are asked to make reservations on their own. To be eligible for the special rates, everyone must specify "RAAG2005" to identify her/himself as a participant. Reservations must be made before August 4.

Innsteg: Close to the campus this coffee bar offers meals and drinks that can be enjoyed with a great river view from the terrace. Meeting point for students. Innstraße 15

Akropolis Athen: Opposite to the conference site on Innstrasse. This restaurant offers greek cuisine. Innstraße 46

PADU: Close to the university, italian food is served to fair prices. We recommend the delicious pizzas and the special offers at lunch time.

Tokyo: "More than Sushi" is promised by this Japanese restaurant close to the campus. At lunchtime there is an all-you-can-eat offer. Innstraße 20

Restaurants in the town center:

Scharfrichter: The Scharfrichter is well known due to its cultural entertainment. Next to cabaret and repertory cinema it also offers traditional food and an excellent choice of wine in a basement vault. Milchgasse 2

Goldenes Schiff: Traditional Bavarian food, as well as Italian cuisine is served. Unterer Sand 8, Old city, not open on Sundays.

Zum Grünen Baum: Real Bavarian Inn, beside solid fish and meat dishes also good choice of vegetarian plates. Höllgasse 7 Passau, Old city.

Osteria del Padrone: In a convenient atmosphere you can enjoy homemade pasta, special fish dishes and other Italian food next to the river Donau. Bratfischwinkel 14, Passau, Old city, not open on Sundays.

Chandi Indian Restaurant: In the heart of the Old city, Michaeligasse 4, not open on Mondays.

Villa Bergeat: Situated very close to the university, this restaurant offers a good cuisine and has a big beer garden. Dr. Hans–Kapfinger Str. 22

Culinarium Lederers: International plates and wines are served on two floors. You can also enjoy the river view on its huge terrace.Lederergasse 16, Passau Innstadt.

Sightseeing:

Dom: The baroque St. Stephen's Cathedral in the heart of the old city has got the world's largest church organ. Every Thursday evening classical organ concerts take place.

Veste Oberhaus: During the period of the prince bishops, Veste Oberhaus was the centre of control and residence, the heart of administration and economy. Nowadays it houses a history museum and a garden café. From the lookout point you can see how the 3 rivers Inn, Ilz and Danube with its 3 different colours, merge.

Museum Moderner Kunst: The Museum of mordern art is situated close to the "Ortsspitze". Next to a well worth seeing permanent exhibition there are interesting temporary exhibitions. In September, film and music by Yoko Ono will be displayed.

Ortsspitze: Take a walk along the river Inn to the "Ortsspitze", which is the end point of the old town where the 3 rivers Danube, Inn and Ilz meet.

Rathausplatz: The facade of the guildhall and the inside of the building are worth seeing. On the guildhall tower, the flood water levels are marked.

Kastell Boiotro: The ruins of the roman castle "Kastell Boiotro" situated in the Innstadt are a nice target for taking a walk.
